The Jewish Federation

Our Mission
The mission of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven is to lead, build, strengthen and renew a dynamic local Jewish community and to provide support and caring for Jewish people in our community, Israel and worldwide. We are guided by the traditional Jewish values of Torah (tradition, learning and deeds), Tikkun Olam (improving the condition of our world), Tzedakah (philanthropy and acts of loving kindness), and k’lal Yisrael (Jewish peoplehood).

Our Vision
The Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven will strive to be the central organization and resource for communal planning, outreach and Jewish education. The Federation will endeavor

  1. to raise the necessary funds to fulfill its mission;
  2. to support its beneficiary agencies, synagogues and other local and national organizations; and
  3. to represent the concerns and needs of our constituents in the Jewish and general Greater New Haven community, Israel and worldwide.

Federation Programs and Services
The Federation’s outstanding Department of Jewish Education initiates, supports and fosters Jewish education through excellent educational opportunities for adults, Jewish educators and children with special needs. Additionally, the DJE’s MAKOM Hebrew High School of Greater New Haven is a national model for providing exceptional Jewish education for 8th- through 12th-grade students.

The Women’s Division of the Federation dedicates its efforts to several aspects of community building. The Women’s Annual Campaign raises over 22% of the Annual Campaign. These funds represent more than the crucial dollars so necessary to our local and global community. They symbolize the dedication of Women’s Division volunteers whose efforts also include hands-on community development in programs like Rachel's Table.

Over the past 25 years, the Federation’s Refugee Resettlement Program has assisted over 1,800 Jews from the Former Soviet Union, including Russia, Belarus, the Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Moldova to resettle in the Greater New Haven Community.

Partnerships
We are a member of United Jewish Communities which represents 189 Jewish federations, 400 independent communities and 700,000 people across North America, who contribute more than $2 billion every year for Jewish needs worldwide, assisting 800 communities in North America, in Israel, the former Soviet Union and 60 countries worldwide. The UJA Allocation also serves Jews worldwide through the efforts of the Jewish Agency for Israel, United Israel Appeal and the American Joint Distribution Committee, Partnership 2000 efforts with our sister region – Afula/Gilboa, missions to Israel and other efforts to strengthen direct connection between Israel and Greater New Haven.
