Philosophy
The Hillel Children's School at Yale helps children aged 7 to 13 discover positive Jewish identities. Our teachers devote their time and creativity to the classroom discussions of Jewish values, ideas and traditions, and help our students understand the role that Judaism can play in their lives.
Our goal is to help children grow to feel a part of the Jewish community at large through their participation in the Hillel school community, and to help them appreciate their heritage.

Jewish Community Relations Council
Only a few months into its existence, the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) is building upon the excellent work of the many devoted individuals working with the diverse communities of greater New Haven. The JCRC performed an informal survey of its Board members and discovered that dozens of organizations have benefited from their volunteer efforts. The Jewish community can be proud of the caring and thoughtful work of the scores of individuals who volunteer their time both within and beyond the Jewish community. The benefiting organizations include interfaith, social justice and housing groups, schools, hospital boards, synagogues, community centers, arts and educational organizations, programs for the elderly, and foundations.
Following the lead of community activists, the JCRC brings the resources of the Jewish Federation into the community. Where appropriate, the JCRC hopes to coordinate diverse efforts, harmonize conflicts in approaches, and provide continuity. The JCRC also has access to the considerable resources of the Jewish Council of Public Affairs (JCPA), the national association of Jewish community relations councils.
Recently, the JCRC supported a resolution before the New Haven Board of Aldermen condemning the growing prevalence of the "N" word in popular culture, particularly among African-American youth. Alderman Yusuf Shah introduced the resolution to raise awareness through public education and discussion about the history of denigration and oppression associated with the term. Shah felt that today’s youth simply have no concept of the despicable connotations of the word. Seeking broad support for his resolution, Shah sat down with the JCRC and Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to draft an additional paragraph to the resolution that protects First Amendment rights by making allowances for the use of the word in scholarly work, literature, the arts, and other communications meant to shed light on the African-American experience of slavery and racial oppression. In addition, the JCRC testified in support of the resolution at a public hearing held by the New Haven Board of Aldermen’s Education Committee and stressed the necessity for all people to stand together to speak against words and deeds of prejudice and hatred.
The JCRC also continues to be involved in the Community Compass Project coordinated by the United Way of Greater New Haven. Some 25 local organizations representing a broad range of corporate, civic, and advocacy groups have joined together to conduct a comprehensive inventory of Greater New Haven community needs and assets. By the end of this year, the Compass project will create a "Blueprint for Action" that prioritizes human service areas where intervention will most improve our community.
Another JCRC venture underway is the establishment of a synagogue social action council to bring the agendas of synagogue social action committees to the JCRC’s table and to help coordinate their efforts in greater New Haven.
Looking ahead, the JCRC will lend its support to building upon the already strong relationship of cooperation and mutual respect that exists between the Latino and Jewish communities of greater New Haven. One such opportunity is the Casa Otonal annual dinner being held on June 18 to honor Connecticut State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and Acting New Haven Chief of Police Francisco Ortiz. In the tradition of the Latino-Jewish Dialogues of past years, this event will bring together members of both communities for an evening of fellowship and celebration. In addition, Camp Laurelwood has invited children from Casa Otonal and the Amistad Academy to join them in July for a concert of pop music at the camp in the first of what is hoped to be many joint ventures among the youth of our communities.

JFS of Greater New Haven Adoption Website
Jewish Family Service of New Haven, Inc. is proud to announce its new website, adoptingchoices.org. With fewer choices available to families and individuals seeking to adopt internationally, JFS is hoping this new website will reach birthmothers who may be considering offering their children for adoption.
JFS homestudy-approved families can list their profiles on this website, which will include information on the waiting family (such as family photos, a “dear birthparent” letter, and a short factual profile of the JFS waiting family). Adopting Choices will, in turn, promote the profile to potential birthparents and help participating families in locating a potential birthparent.

igaavrikjewelry.com
Our philosophy is quite simple: we believe that extraordinary jewelry should
be priced reasonably. Choosing artists who exercise a pure dedication to
aesthetics as well as individuality is our top criterion. When customers see
our company's name, Mavrik, they often assume one of two things: either we
are misspelling "maverick" or we are huge Top Gun fans. In truth, neither is
the case. Our company imports its entire line from Israel, long revered for
its unique and high quality jewelry and accessories. In Hebrew, Mavrik
(pronounced mav'RIK) means shiny or brilliant. Just look at our jewelry and
view its brilliance for yourself.
According to The American Heritage dictionary, maverick is defined as "one
who resists adherence to a group." In this sense, we do consider ourselves
to be mavericks of a certain breed - for we are quite different from our
competitors. We do not own a storefront, nor do we produce a print catalog.
We buy direct from the manufacturer and pass the savings to our customers,
so they can enjoy the most beautiful jewelry which is both classic in style
and very contemporary.
